Professor Lance Rake's "Semester" bike uses locally grown bamboo in a carbon fiber composite structure he developed to create strong, lightweight hex tubes- perfect for for bicycles. Pofessors Lance Rake and Andrea Herstowski with and a group of KU students Industrial Design, Architecture and Mechanical Engineering students; Adam Brcic, Austin Swick, Brandon Clay, George Parton, Mitch Favrow, and Taylor Stelter spent three weeks in Greensboro, Alabama developing, building, riding, testing bamboo bikes using the "Hex Tube" technology.

In partnership with HERObike, Professor Rake hopes that his Semester bike will help create jobs and provide job training opportunities in this small rural Alabama community. The Semester project is the result of multidisciplinary collaboration between KU Professor Lance Rake, Future Partners, Public-Library and filmmaker B.S Powell. The successful Kickstarter Campaign launched in August 2013.
